CRI and Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease Launch 2009 Edition of the Almanac of Chronic Disease

CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, president of Canyon Ranch Institute, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), and national chairperson of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD) hosted the briefing to release the 2009 Almanac of Chronic Disease on May 14. The Almanac is a comprehensive resource of information and data on chronic disease that clearly demonstrates that improvements in chronic disease prevention and management will save lives and reduce health care spending in our nation. Dr. Carmona was joined at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. by Senator Tom Harkin and PFCD Executive Director Ken Thorpe, Ph.D., who also shared remarks on addressing the chronic disease crisis through comprehensive health reform.

"The scientific evidence in the Almanac is clear. The health of our nation and our economy will only improve when we move from a ‘sick-care’ system focused on treating chronic diseases to a true health care system devote to prevention and wellness," said Dr. Carmona.

The Almanac of Chronic Disease is an annual publication that contains a collection of charts, quotes, and statistics on chronic disease in the United States. According to the data in the Almanac, nearly half of Americans currently suffer from one or more chronic disease, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The publication serves as a reference for leaders who are working to make a positive difference in our nation’s health.

The Almanac was co-sponsored by Canyon Ranch Institute and seven other PFCD partner organizations: American Academy of Nursing; DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance; National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD); National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems; Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA); U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and YMCA of the USA.

Dr. Carmona contributed the Almanac Foreword, and CRI Executive Director Jennifer Cabe, M.A., PFCD advisory board member, contributed commentaries within the Almanac chapters.
