The Canyon Ranch Institute Prevention Pioneer Award recognizes and honors individuals, organizations, and initiatives that serve as role models for effective ways to improve wellness, increase prevention, eliminate the scourge of health disparities, and improve health literacy at the individual, family, community, national, and global levels.

The Canyon Ranch Institute Prevention Pioneer Award was presented to Kenneth P. Moritsugu, M.D., M.P.H., FACPM, in recognition of his tireless commitment to improving health in the United States and globally. Dr. Moritsugu was honored at a meeting between Canyon Ranch Institute and Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute team members that was hosted by CRI President Richard Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS in Tucson, AZ.
As a leader in the Office of the Surgeon General and an admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Dr. Moritsugu worked to improve wellness, increase prevention, eliminate health disparities, and improve the health literacy of all people through evidence-based science and programming. Through his professional and personal commitment, countless individuals and communities are enjoying healthier lives.
Before serving as acting surgeon general of the United States in 2006, Dr. Moritsugu was the deputy surgeon general of the United States and the principal advisor to U.S. Surgeons General for nearly 10 years. Having completed residencies in internal medicine and in preventive medicine, Dr. Moritsugu is board certified in preventive medicine and holds Fellowships in the American College of Preventive Medicine, the Royal Society of Health, and the Royal Society of Medicine. Dr. Moritsugu has Type 1 diabetes and appreciates the many challenges facing patients and diabetes professionals today.
After his retirement from federal service, Dr. Moritsugu has continued to lead in the areas of disease prevention and health promotion. He serves as Chairman of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute, where he collaborates with colleagues and partners to transform diabetes care through training and education.

May 7, 2008 – Julio Frenk, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D.
Julio Frenk, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D. provided a keynote presentation co-sponsored by Canyon Ranch Institute for faculty, students and friends of the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona on May 7, 2008. Dr. Frenk discussed Globalization and Health: Risks and Opportunities on Our Common Border as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the James E. Dalen, M.D., M.P.H. Health Care Policy Lecture Series.
Following Dr. Frenk's remarks, Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, president of Canyon Ranch Institute and 17th U.S. Surgeon General (2002-2006), and Jennifer Cabe, CRI executive director, presented the CRI Prevention Pioneer Award to Dr. Frenk. In presenting the award, Jennifer particularly noted Dr. Frenk's leadership in global public health and health diplomacy. Dr. Frenk, Mexico's Minister of Health from 2000 to 2006, is a senior fellow in the global health program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and president of the Carso Health Institute in Mexico, a non-profit organization focused on health-systems innovations in Latin America. Dr. Frenk was named Dean of the College of Public Health at Harvard University in July 2008.

February 16, 2007 – Todobebé
The first-ever Prevention Pioneer Award was presented by Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, President of Canyon Ranch Institute and 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006) on February 16, 2007, to Todobebé, a multimedia company dedicated to families who are planning, expecting, and raising babies. Todobebé was selected to receive the CRI Prevention Pioneer Award because of the company's commitment to providing wellness and prevention information to Hispanic families through television, radio, publications, digital media, and grassroots events.
The award ceremony was held at Todobebé headquarters in Miami, Florida.
