In Peru, diarrheal diseases are the third-leading cause of death of children under 5 years of age, and the majority of those deaths are caused by poor household hygiene. In 2010, Canyon Ranch Institute partnered with The Clorox Company to develop and implement the Arts for Behavior Change (ABC) Program in Lima, Peru, which aims to advance health literacy, improve household hygiene, and save lives.

Background

The Clorox Company is a leading manufacturer and marketer of consumer products.The Clorox Company is committed to family and community well-being and extends support to communities where their products are sold. Clorox disinfecting products can make a significant difference in the spread of infectious disease. Infectious diseases kill more than 13.6 million people in the world each year.¹

The first project of the partnership between CRI and The Clorox Company is the development and implementation of the ABC Program to advance health literacy, improve household hygiene, and prevent disease in Lima, Peru.

How We're Making a Difference

Arts for Behavior Change Program

The goal of this program is to develop and test an arts-based intervention that combines artistic disciplines, such as theater, music, dance, puppetry, and storytelling, in order to advance health literacy and improve hygiene-related behaviors that will lead to improvements in household hygiene in low-income communities in Lima, Peru.
