Chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis – are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems in the United States. Southern Arizona has some of the highest rates of chronic disease in the nation, and the poorest people and communities often have the poorest health. In the past 30 years, overweight and obesity have increased sharply among low-income adults and children in Southern Arizona.¹

A Message from Founders Mel and Enid Zuckerman

Enid and Mel ZuckermanWe have been very excited by the growth of Canyon Ranch Institute and the dynamic partnerships that are bringing the healthy living practices of Canyon Ranch to people in diverse communities. Some time ago, though, we started to feel that we weren’t paying enough attention to our hometown. Tucson and the surrounding area are home to many people who are living with the burden of health disparities.

We’re pleased to announce that the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program is being offered to the patients of El Rio Community Health Center. Nearly 70 percent of El Rio patients have incomes below the federal poverty level, and too many of them are living with chronic diseases that can be addressed by changes in lifestyle. In addition, we are going to bring Canyon Ranch Institute programs to many more people across our entire community.
