Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Hispanic Americans. Hora de Hablar CARDIO was launched in 2010 as a culturally relevant Spanish-language adaptation of the award-winning Time to Talk CARDIO program that aims to advance health literacy about heart health.

Background

In 2009, Canyon Ranch Institute partnered with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation, Merck, and RIASWorks to develop the Time to Talk CARDIO (Creating A Real Dialogue In the Office) program. Time to Talk CARDIO is an educational program that focuses on advancing health literacy about heart health.

In 2010, Time to Talk CARDIO launched Hora de Hablar CARDIO (Creando la Atencion Real y Dialogo Inmediato en la Oficina) a free online Spanish-language adaptation of the Time to Talk CARDIO program.

How We're Making a Difference

Research shows that skilled communication may help patients recall instructions, adhere to medical recommendations, and feel greater satisfaction with care. Through a series of free online educational videos and materials, the Hora de Hablar CARDIO tool helps patients and providers have more clear and valuable in-office communications.

Hora de Hablar CARDIO is a culturally and linguistically appropriate program built through research, translation, and adaptation of the Time to Talk CARDIO materials and program. By using this culturally relevant program, Spanish-speaking patients and their health care professionals can make the most of their discussions about heart health.

Evaluation

Hora de Hablar CARDIO is built on the same approach as the award-winning Time to Talk CARDIO program, which has been shown to increase overall use of communication skills and improved overall satisfaction with medical visits.
