The Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) didn’t just change my life – it saved my life!

My daughter and I had moved to Savannah, GA, by ourselves, and we were having a hard time. All our family is in New York. We were lonely and depressed. We had each other, but our lives just weren’t right.
My daughter, Tikiha, was 16 years old, overweight, and having health problems. When the nurse practitioner at Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health Care heard about our family situation, she recommended I join a free program called the CRI LEP. Tikiha was too young to join, but we thought if I joined, I could help her.

I joined out of love for my daughter, but I found out how much I needed the CRI LEP for myself! I was overweight, too. My blood sugar was too high. I work a high-stress job and was eating a lot of junk and fatty foods. I wasn’t exercising. All that, and a history of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in my family, made it clear I was headed in the wrong direction. Through the CRI LEP, I learned that I had to change my life, and that I could help my daughter improve her life, too.

I had a lot to learn, so I worked hard in the CRI LEP. I enjoyed learning how to eat healthier. I loved the supermarket trip where we learned how to read food labels and ingredient lists, and I learned how to cook so many healthy new things during the cooking demonstrations with the dieticians. And, I learned I truly LOVE yoga!

Exercising, eating, socializing – all of the activities in the CRI LEP helped me feel happier and more relaxed. The instructors are so caring! They really took their time with me – no matter how many questions I asked. They really want to help. The other participants are now like family. I’m not alone or depressed anymore.

The CRI LEP has helped Tikiha, too. Now, we walk and run together. She doesn’t eat fast food, and she’s lost 20 pounds. Since I started the CRI LEP at Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health Care, I’ve lost 30 pounds. I’ve gone from walking to running 5Ks! I sleep better. Everyone says I smile more. I love myself more. I love life more. I won’t go back to the way I was because, for me, the CRI LEP is for the rest of my life.
