A year ago, I lost my 30-year-old son to drugs. I left my husband. My mom died. I had a couple of car accidents. I fell and broke my arm. My whole life was falling apart. I didn’t think I could go on.
Then, a friend told me about the Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) in Pittsfield, MA. Somehow, I just knew the BHS-CRI LEP was a chance to change my life. I knew if I didn’t start taking care of myself that I would end up sitting alone in my house waiting to die. I knew that I needed to be around people and have positive things in my life, or I wouldn’t be around long.
The BHS-CRI LEP gave me a wealth of knowledge about my health – from eating to exercising and everything else. I paid attention to everything and everyone who spoke, from the nutritionist who taught me how to read labels when I shop, which I do now, to the behavioral counselor who helped me find my life again. I listened to the BHS-CRI LEP staff, the other participants, all the information, the laughing and the crying. They all just clicked. They all inspired me.
I’ve been through a lot of physical pain and surgeries in my life, and I can tell you I’d rather feel physical pain like that than the emotional pain I used to feel every day. The BHS-CRI LEP taught me how to manage my emotions and to find my purpose in life. That was magical. I realized I can make myself happy. I have to live for myself. I have to make the time to take care of myself. Taking care of myself means that I can help other people, too.
Now, there’s no more junk food in my house. I exercise every day. I’ve lost 50 pounds. Now, I have a little girl in my life – the daughter of my son’s former girlfriend. I’ve found my purpose in life. I’m 65, and I feel better than I have in 30 years. I’ve got stuff to do. I have other people I want to help.
Today, I look forward to every day. I feel like a whole new person thanks to the BHS-CRI LEP. Thank you!
